Post-Op Report
Our time in Boston on Tuesday went very well. Our cardiologist was happy with how Luke's echocardiogram looked. Both repairs (the VSD and coarc) that they did to his heart look very good, and the strength of his heart pumping has returned to normal. When we left the hospital it was still weak, so we are so happy that has improved to where it should be. His mitral valve is still mildly abnormal, and may always be. It should not affect anything and is not of concern at this point. It is just something they will keep an eye on over time. We are able to start weaning him off of the diuretic he is taking (to drain the fluid that had built up in his lungs), but he will need to stay on his blood pressure medication 3 times a day for the indefinite future. He has gained almost a pound since being discharged from the hospital, which is great! He's been eating so well and seems so happy.
We also discussed again with our Doctor what's ahead. His preference would be to see Luke again 3 months after surgery, and that we'd stay in the States until that point. We are still working out our specific plans, but it looks like we will be in the USA until sometime in December in order to give Luke the time he needs to heal and grow, with access to his excellent medical here for that initial recovery period. (Before all of this happened, we had been planning to come to the States from December to February anyway, so we can just move that up until now). He will have frequent pediatrician visits in the next couple months to do weight and blood pressure checks before our next visit to Boston in December. For his longer term care, after we return overseas, he will be monitored by the cardiologist that gave us the original diagnosis. He is American Board certified, and is connected with our doctors here in Boston, so they feel good about his ability to monitor Luke over time. If there ever were a concern or a procedure that needed to be done, we could always travel back to Boston. We will keep you updated as we finalize our plans.
We are loving seeing our little guy feeling so much better. We feel deeply grateful for God's kindness to us in all of this. We can see a lot of good He is bringing to our family through this experience. Thank you for your part in that through prayer.
